Iron oxide pigments have diversified functions in paints and coatings. Adding color is a visual decorative effect, but they also contribute to the strengthening of coating layers, help to protect surfaces and give indicative visual effects.

Whilst red iron oxides are usable in a wide variety of plastic resins, yellow and black products are less heat resistant and change color shade at relatively low temperatures. Therefore, the use of yellow and black in plastics is very limited. The industry consumes a significant amount of iron oxides in the coloration of polyolefins for use in containers like e.g. flowerpots.
